About RT-PCR Tests

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests are the gold-standard for COVID-19.

Contrary to rapid antigen tests, PCR tests do require several hours, specialised laboratory equipment, and highly skilled medical technologists.

You may have heard of "RT-PCR" testing required for entry into some countries.

It stands for "reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction" (what a mouthful!) and as you may already have guessed, RT-PCR is simply one type of PCR test.

What's so special about RT-PCR tests, then?
They can be used to detect viruses (e.g., SARS, HIV) that store their biological blueprint codes as RNA, instead of DNA (e.g., humans, cats). Learn more in the video below.

Acumen Diagnostics is a clinical laboratory licensed by the MOH in 2020 to provide these molecular diagnostics services, such as SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR tests.

About PCR Swab Techniques

Nasopharyngeal Swabs
The most ideal swab technique that reaches past the nasal cavity, allowing the swab to "sample" the nasopharynx where most viral material accumulates. *This is the swab type required for entry into Japan.

Oropharyngeal Swabs
Ideal in cases of fracture or injury to the nose, head, and skull, and when the nasal cavity is simply blocked due to medical conditions.

Oropharyngeal Mid-Turbinate Swabs
Swab at both the oropharyngeal area and the mid-turbinate area. Preferred over just oropharyngeal due to increased test sensitivity and ideal in cases of mild blockage in the nasal cavity.
